“Manufacturing Matters” Inaugural Radio Segment Scheduled for Today

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Manufacturing matters, and if you aren’t willing to take my word for it, just check out the numbers – Economic impact models suggest that the creation of 100 new manufacturing jobs in New Hampshire will create as many as 138 additional jobs in the rest of the state economy, add $11 million in earnings, $18 million in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and generate $1.2 million in state and local tax revenue.

Further, while Smart Manufacturing/High Technology (SMHT) companies represent eight percent of the companies paying the state’s Business Profits and Business Enterprise taxes, those same companies accounted for 23 percent of the total business tax revenue in FY2008, the highest of any industrial sector.

There’s no doubt that manufacturing is the number one industry in the state and the creator of well paying, sustainable jobs with an upward career trajectory. In order to shine a positive light on the sector, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, USDA Rural Development and WTPL 107.7 FM (102.3 FM and 94.3 FM as well – if you’re chained to your desk, you can also access the live stream at www.wtplfm.com) are partnering to present “Manufacturing Matters,” a new monthly radio segment that will debut today at 3:05 p.m.

“New Hampshire Today” show host Jack Heath will be joined by New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Chris Way and a guest representing the best and brightest of the manufacturing sector. Today’s guest will be Dennis Delay, economist with the New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies. In addition to being an economist at the Center, Dennis is also New Hampshire State Forecast Manager for the New England Economic Partnership, a non-profit association of economists that have monitored and forecast regional economic trends for more than three decades.

Dennis is the author of a report sponsored by the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire (BIA), in collaboration with the New Hampshire High Technology Council (NHHTC) and several BIA members that highlighted the importance of manufacturing to the state. Among the findings:

*The SMHT sector, which includes 3,700 companies in New Hampshire employing almost 80,000 people, paid out $6.4 billion in wages and benefits, making it the largest single sector of New Hampshire’s economy (19 percent). The next largest sector is government and government enterprises (15 percent), followed by healthcare and social assistance (14 percent).

*Paying an average wage of $1,200 per week, which is 40 percent higher than the average weekly wage for all private sector employees working in New Hampshire, SMHT companies account for 9 percent of New Hampshire’s private sector employers, but they employ more than 15 percent of New Hampshire’s private sector workers.

*SMHT has been one of the hardest hit sectors in the most recent recession. But while the sector is changing in character, wages and benefits continue to grow. Wages and benefits paid by SMHT companies in the state increased from $3.7 billion in 1990 to $6.4 billion in 2009, even as the number of manufacturing jobs in New Hampshire declined. Manufacturers in the state now produce more industrial output, but with fewer employees, than they did twenty years ago.

To learn more about the state’s number one industry, be sure to listen to “Manufacturing Matters” today at 3:05 p.m.!!!

NH Business Resource Center Partners with Celebrate NH Tour

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011
Vacationers are good news for New Hampshire’s economic development, says Michael Bergeron, Business Development Manager at the NH Division of Economic Development.
“Many family-owned companies from other states move to New Hampshire because the owners (who are usually second or third generation owners) have experienced the quality of life while vacationing here. That’s why it makes such good sense for us to partner with 107.7 WTPL/The Pulse and Jack Heath on the Cold Springs RV Celebrate New Hampshire Tour. We’ll be able to reach visitors to northern New Hampshire and let them know that – if you love visiting here, you’ll love doing business here.”

"New Hampshire Today Show" host Jack Heath stands by the custom RV on the first day of the "Celebrate NH Tour."

From August 8th to 12th, Heath is touring northern New Hampshire in the Cold Springs RV, stopping at five of the state’s most population attractions for a live broadcast that will be heard on WTPL each day from 3pm to 6pm. The attractions are Franconia Notch State Park/The Flume (Monday), Lancaster Fairgrounds/NH Dairy Cattle Association State Show (Tuesday), Conway Scenic Railroad (Wednesday), Settlers’ Green Outlet Village (Thursday) and Clark’s Trading Post (Friday).

The public is invited to stop by the live broadcasts to sample New Hampshire products, see demonstrations and enter to win prizes.

Local Businesses Invited to Be On Air

Local businesses interested in being on air should contact Heath in advance by emailing heath.jack@comcast.net or calling (603) 545-0777.

“New Hampshire tourism is an asset to the state’s economic development. Not only does tourism create jobs, it introduces the state to businesspeople from out of state,” concludes Bergeron. “Hearing the success stories of businesses in our North Country could inspire a visiting business owner to consider a move here.”

For more information on the NH Division of Economic Development’s business recruitment programs, contact Michael Bergeron at (603) 271-2591.

First Class Business Segment to Feature Rimol Greenhouse Systems

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Talk about timing – on today’s “First Class Business” segment of “New Hampshire Today With Jack Heath,” Jack and New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy will be featuring Rimol Greenhouse System of Hooksett, NH, a company that made a major announcement today regarding a key strategic partnership. To learn more, listen to the segment on WTPL today at 4:05 p.m. at 107.7 FM or online at www.wtplfm.com or check out the press release below.

RIMOL GREENHOUSE SYSTEMS & AMERICAN HYDROPONICS
GROW WINNING PARTNERSHIP

A New Hampshire greenhouse manufacturer and a California hydroponics company are hoping that their budding East/West relationship will be one that bears fruit for their customers and the environment.

The two companies have entered a partnership for the mutual goal of providing growers with exceptional value and service in total design and implementation of greenhouses and hydroponic systems.

The two companies have entered a partnership for the mutual goal of providing growers with exceptional value and service in total design and implementation of greenhouses and hydroponic systems.

Hooksett, NH-based Rimol Greenhouse Systems (RGS) and Arcata, California-based American Hydroponics (AmHydro) announced today that they have entered a partnership for the mutual goal of providing growers with exceptional value and service in total design and implementation of greenhouses and hydroponic systems.

“Given the unprecedented rise of the hydroponics industry and the fact that more and more people are recognizing the benefits of locally grown food, this partnership makes sense on so many different levels,” said Rimol Greenhouse Systems Founder Bob Rimol. “As industry leaders in our individual disciplines, we understand that by partnering, we can offer our customers the best possible blueprint and game plan to grow healthier and safer food for themselves and their neighbors.”

Hydroponic plant cultivation is an efficient method of achieving maximum production in minimal space, without soil, by recirculating minerals dissolved in water. As an established branch of horticulture, hydroponics uses 1/10th the amount of water as a regular farm to produce the same amount of food.  When coupled with greenhouses, no harmful pesticides or herbicides are required ensuring optimum plant and human health.

RGS designs, manufactures and installs greenhouse structures and systems that control light, temperature (heating and cooling), CO2 and the overall environment. Even insect control is factored into the overall greenhouse design, which also takes into account the best crops to grow, budget and revenue expectations.

Located in a 16,000-square-foot manufacturing facility overlooking the foothills, green pastures and tall redwoods in Humboldt County, California, American Hydroponics has been providing state-of-the-art crop performance products and services for people to grow crops successfully for the past 26 years. American Hydroponics currently has the highest rate of successful growers using their commercial hydroponic systems than any other system manufacturer and looks forward to combining their skills and expertise with their new partner.

“RGS shares our belief that the well-being of the environment is everyone’s responsibility and that water and land conservation is more important than ever before,” said American Hydroponics President Michael Christian. “Recognizing the fact that a smarter approach to farming has become a necessity to preserve farmland and other natural resources, the synergy between our two companies is natural and the relationship extremely beneficial to our customers.”

One company that has already benefited from the partnership is Hackettstown, New Jersey-based Greenway Flowers, which has expanded their traditional floral business to also include hydroponic, food-producing greenhouses. With a new, state-of-the-art RGS greenhouse outfitted with an American Hydroponics lettuce growing system, Greenway is now diversifying their business and finding a new revenue stream.

“Today Mom and Pop florists have to compete against supermarkets, online companies and imported flowers.  In order to ensure our long-term sustainability as a business, we needed to branch out and add something new,” said Greenway Flowers Owner George Cummings. “With the greenhouse and lettuce growing systems, we have a new product, new customers and enhanced cash flow. Now, instead of just being florists, we’re also learning to farm.”

Diversification Leading to a New North Country Economy

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Economic diversification is the key to building a world class state economy. To that end, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development would very much like to tip its hat to The Balsams Vice President of Sales and New Business Development Gary Armitage, a visionary thinker who is bringing a world class film festival to the North Country.

For years, we have been preaching the gospel of communities taking a community inventory of assets that are unique to their region, and through the creation of this festival, Gary has embraced that message. The North Country economy isn’t just about paper mills and machine shops (though they are certainly a big piece of the puzzle); it’s also about the Jericho Park ATV Festival in July that brought 2,000 visitors into the region and gave a quick boost to local stores, restaurants and motels; it’s about entrepreneurs with great ideas choosing the scenic North Country as a great launching pad for their business; and yes, it’s now about the First Annual FLICKERS North Country Film Festival as well.

The Balsams' Gary ArmitageI was fortunate enough to join Gary at lunch along with WTPL’s Jack Heath and Shelly Breer who have been spreading the word about this great event. I was incredibly impressed with everyone’s enthusiasm for creating a festival that would develop a new regional awareness of the beauty of the North Country as well as the untapped opportunities for its economic potential.

Good luck to Gary and the rest of The Balsam’s team for great success with the Festival. We at Economic Development and the “No Bull Business Blog” stand firmly behind this effort and will do our best to make it as successful as possible. By giving new visitors a ticket to a first class event, Gary is doing his part to build a new economic reality in an area that is about to learn how positive and profitable diversification can be.

“First Class Business” in the Fast Lane Tomorrow

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

It’ll be a smooth ride on the “First Class Business” segment of Jack Heath’s “New Hampshire Today” show on WTPL-FM on Wednesday, June 2 at 4 p.m. when Capital City Limousine Owner Joey Seluk is welcomed to the program.

capital-city-limoLocated in Concord, Capital City Limo has been a great friend to the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, donating the use of its fleet for our “Open Invitation” (www.nhopeninvitation.com) initiative. Joey and his great group of drivers have been extremely helpful in picking up Massachusetts business owners and transporting them to New Hampshire so that our business recruiters can tell them about the benefits of expanding or relocating to the Granite State.

With service extending to the New England states and as far away as Montreal, Capital City Limousine (www.capitalcitylimo-nh.com) is a great option for weddings, proms, concerts and trips to the airport.  And, interestingly enough, limo service is actually a “green” driving option as the limo industry is all about moving people in the capitalcitystatehouserear of the vehicle with professional chauffeurs. So when you consider the rear passenger capacity of a Toyota Prius is two vs. a Lincoln 100″ or 120″ at nine, that translates into 90 pmpg (passenger miles per gallon) for the Prius and 180 pmpg for the Lincoln Limousine. Therefore the Lincoln 120″ delivers twice the passenger fuel economy than the Prius. Pretty neat, huh?

So, to learn more about these and many other interesting facts, join Capital City’s Joey Seluk, New Hampshire Department of Resources & Economic Development Commissioner George Bald and WTPL’s Jack Heath for what’s sure to be an informative and fun “First Class Business” segment. You can tune in live at 107.7 FM or via your computer at www.wtplfm.com.

Global Relief Technologies to be Featured in “First Class Business” Segment

Friday, February 26th, 2010

When disaster struck in Haiti last month, Portsmouth-based Global Relief Technologies was quickly on the scene providing the technology necessary to upload critical medical information. Now they’re being hailed as a “First Class Business” as part of Jack Heath’s “New Hampshire Today” show on WTPL 107.7 FM on Wednesday, March 3rd at 4 p.m.

grtGlobal Relief Technologies (GRT) was founded to help organizations in remote, disconnected and extreme environments report critical information in “real time.” They developed the software and the PDAs to help rescue workers and relief organizations like the American Red Cross gather and process information during a crisis. Currently, their satellite linked handheld computers are providing vital medical assessment information which is helping to give Haitian amputees a much higher chance for survival and recovery.

“This is a company that is improving the lives of others not only domestically, but internationally,” said Heath. “In an age where communication is key, this is a technology company that is linking people with important information in the most adverse circumstances.”

GRT Vice President of Operations Art Cleaves, a former Regional Administrator for FEMA Region I, will be the special guest for the segment which will highlight the company’s rapid growth and future plans.

“First Class Business” appears on a monthly basis as part of the “New Hampshire Today” program that runs from 3-5 p.m. Monday through Friday on “The Pulse.” “New Hampshire Today” host Jack Heath and New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development Commissioner George Bald share good news about innovative new products created by New Hampshire companies, community service projects undertaken by local businesses and firms that are thriving despite a tough economic climate.

vinyl-recordThis month’s “First Class Business” is Manchester-based Music Connection, a music store which harkens back to the day when vinyl was king. “The Music Connection is a step back in time where all of your old favorites can be heard in the background while you shop,” said Heath. “If you miss the purity of a vinyl recording or have a burning question about a release that you’ve never quite been able to find, this show will be a great one for you.”
