EarthTec Named March “Innovation Rocks!” Winner

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Wearing recycled plastic bottles on your head might sound strange to most, but not to the staff of EarthTec, winner of the New Hampshire Business Resource Center’s “Innovation Rocks!” award for the month of March.

earthtec_greenThe Portsmouth-based company, an eco-conscious company that turns recyclable plastic bottles into lifestyle apparel, is one of the first firms of its kind. Each EarthTec garment uses approximately one dozen recycled bottles in a process that creates recycled fiber that rivals virgin polyester. Its fleece-lined and water resistant jackets are now being worn by the Portsmouth Police Department, Newington Police Department and Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department at a fraction of the price of similar garments on the market.

“I had the good fortune of receiving an eco-friendly EarthTec fleece hat as a giveaway at the recent UNH men’s hockey game and can attest to its high quality,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “Not only does this innovative company do work that truly benefits the environment, their products are stylish and stand up to the rigors of use. Their commitment to both sustainability and style set them apart.”

iCAD Named February “Innovation Rocks!” Award Winner

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

“Never stop looking”- that’s the philosophy of a local company that is consistently looking for answers that can lead to earlier detection of cancers. For its efforts in creating products that lead to increased patient survival rates, iCAD has been named the New Hampshire Business Resource Center’s “Innovation Rocks!” award winner for the month of February.

icad2The Nashua-based company, an industry-leading provider of advanced image analysis and workflow solutions for the early identification of cancer, is committed to helping physicians and patients in the fight against the most prevalent cancers – breast, colorectal and prostate. Its SecondLook® CAD systems are able to detect up to 72% of actionable missed breast cancers an average of 15 months earlier than screening mammography alone and its Virtual Colonoscopy (VC), also known as CT Colonography (CTC), offers patients a less-invasive alternative to conventional colonic polyp diagnostic techniques.

“With over 11 million Americans living with cancer, it’s important to recognize companies like iCAD who are leading the way in early detection and less costly treatment options,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “This is a company that is delivering clinical excellence and improving lives on a daily basis.”

NH Economic Development and Three Wolf Moon Joined at the Howl

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

It has been said to cure diseases, help humans achieve flight and improve bowling skills. It has also generated over 1,600 reviews on Amazon.com and created a worldwide stir resulting in media coverage from ABC News and the BBC. And soon it will be used to stimulate economic development in the state of New Hampshire.

threewolfmoonThe New Hampshire Division of Economic Development today announced that it has designated the “Three Wolf Moon” the official t-shirt of New Hampshire economic development. Created by Keene-based t-shirt manufacturer The Mountain, the shirt, which features three wolves howling at the moon, became an overnight viral Internet sensation when Brian Govern, a student at Rutgers University, authored a satirical comment about the garment on Amazon.com. That led to a barrage of similar reviews which propelled the sales of the shirt to a number one ranking in Amazon’s apparel line.

“The Mountain’s ‘Three Wolf Moon’ is a true New Hampshire success story,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher. “What started off as a tongue in cheek take on a cool t-shirt has resulted in worldwide acclaim for a very creative and growing Granite State business. When every social media outlet as well as the mainstream press is covering your story, you know that you’ve created something big.”

Worn by luminaries ranging from “The Office’s” Rainn Wilson and “True Blood’s” Allan Hyde to “Napleon Dynamite’s” Jon Heder and even the U.S. Marine Corps’ Bravo Company 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, the “Three Wolf Moon” shirt has made its mark in popular culture. Boucher said that he plans to initiate an online campaign featuring local business officials and celebrities wearing the shirt to capitalize on the phenomenon.

“It’s definitely an attention getter,” he said. “By capturing the interest of those who follow pop culture trends, we hope that they’ll also check out our other online offerings and discover that New Hampshire is a state that does business differently and embraces the creativity of its many innovative companies.”

In addition to the online campaign, the Division of Economic Development also plans to give “Three Wolf Moon” shirts to winners of its monthly “Innovation Rocks!” initiative. “Innovation Rocks” is an awards program that celebrates the ingenuity of New Hampshire’s innovation leaders.

“We’re very excited about this partnership and the opportunity to let more people know about business opportunities available here,” said The Mountain Art Director Michael McGloin. “As a local company, we’re pleased to be able to do our part to use Three Wolf Moon in a creative way to help attract other companies to New Hampshire. Working together is what makes our state different and great.”

McGloin pointed out that The Mountain currently markets over 400 other “Animal Spirit Power Shirts” and that the “Three Wolf Moon” shirt has spent nearly 200 days on Amazon’s Top 100 list. With over 1,300 5 star reviews from users, 2010 might very well be the “year of the wolf.”

And as for the “magical properties” that the shirt is purported to possess, the Division of Economic Development’s Boucher said that he’s very optimistic about it’s anticipated effect on the New Hampshire economy.

“If it can generate half of the results that Amazon shoppers are experiencing, we’re in awesome shape – every CEO should be wearing this shirt,” he said.

The Center’s “Innovation Rocks!” ad captured top honors in the “Print Ad Campaign” category as part of NEDA’s 2009 Literature & Promotions Competition. Comments on the ad touting the Center’s “Innovation Rocks!” initiative which honors New Hampshire companies creating innovation products and services ranged from “captivating” to “well done” while one judge termed the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s No Bull Business Blog “ahead of the curve.” The blog merited a “Superior” ranking in the “E-News Communications” category.

“For years we’ve been happy to tout our marketing efforts as being cutting edge, and these awards certainly tell us that our aggressive approach is right on target,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “The New Hampshire business community demands an innovative approach and welcomes our willingness to reach out to them in new and exciting ways. They deserve nothing less than our creative best.”

We here at the No Bull Business Blog are dedicated to ridding the world of needless business jargon and acronyms. We believe that simplicity is best and that the business community wants clear and concise messages about the programs and services they require to succeed.

dodgeball-3With that goal as a backdrop, we are happy to unveil the newest addition to No Bull TV, a short video that combines dodgeball with business doublespeak. For those of you who’ve forgotten, No Bull TV is the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s  new YouTube channel that is geared toward providing a video component to our communications efforts – right now, the channel is being used to draw attention to this blog and our social media efforts. As we speak, we are sifting through footage culled from the No Bull Motorcycle Run, Greenerpalooza and Social Media Night at the Manchester Wolves and plan to upload those videos soon. We will also be featuring some of our upcoming events, our Open Invitation initiative and our Innovation Rocks winners.

dodgeball-2In terms of the dodgeball shoot (http://www.youtube.com/user/nobulltv) , special thanks to the very creative John Herman and his film crew and actors, to our own awesome ad team at Square Spot Design and especially to Allen and Lani Voivod, our social media gurus at Epiphanies, Inc. for having a huge red ball launched at them countless times over a one hour period.

Stay tuned for more No Bull TV and until then, avoid all unnecessary business mumbo jumbo or be prepared to duck!

No Bull TV Launches – Ole!!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

At this stage of my professional career, vanity is out the window. It’s all about creating the type of stir that will drive results in a creative, non-traditional fashion.

That’s why on one warm August afternoon, I found myself in the middle of a field at Miles Smith Farm (www.milessmithfarm.com)  in Loudon wearing a matador outfit (complete with Jerry Seinfeld “puffy shirt”) and waving a red cape in front of 1,500 pound Scottish Highlander cattle.

The reason I was partaking in this activity was relatively simple – the NH Division of Economic Development needed to kick off its “No Bull TV” YouTube campaign in high energy, full speed ahead fashion. What better way to tell the New Hampshire business community about our desire to provide them with the best possible information (minus the bull) than by driving all of the “bull” out of the state?

Considering the fact that there appear to be few or no live, breathing bulls in the state and the mechanical variety seem to be in short supply, the Scottish Highland Cattle at Miles Smith Farm were a more than suitable substitute. With the tremendous assistance of Farm Co-Owner Carole Soule, we were able to craft a fun YouTube spot with the great setting of a farm that has been in operation since the 1850’s. Miles Smith Farm is a historic jewel in our state with 36 acres and a tremendous view that allows its owners to view the July 4th fireworks from five neighboring towns.

Our message of the YouTube campaign is simple – we’re listening to you. In every interaction with business leaders and private sector partners, we’ve heard the same refrain, Give us something different….present information to us in a way that no one else is so that we can stand up and take notice.

The job of a State Communications Director is to inform, entertain and interpret and somewhere down the line, the whole notion of entertaining and challenging our audience got lost. Let’s face it – there are millions of communications vehicles available to business owners so it is not only our mission but our mandate to reach out to our audience in ways that make them want to come back to us again.

So if our “No Bull TV” spots lead folks to the door, here’s what they’ll find on this blog – information about new grant opportunities, news about training sessions and economic development tools that save businesses time and money and invitations to events that increase the knowledge base of CEOs and line workers alike.

With that in mind, please take a moment to view our two new “No Bull TV” spots on our Youtube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/nobulltv. Make this channel a regular stop while you surf the Web or really go out on a limb and become a subscriber. In the days and months ahead, we’ll be featuring some “Innovation Rocks!” winners, shining a spotlight on some emerging business leaders and hyping some pretty awesome events.

Much thanks to Carole Soule at Miles Smith Farm for her assistance in bringing a neat idea to fruition, to Jud Bartlett and Lisa Williams at Square Spot Design for their logistical and creative assistance, to Allen Voivod at Epiphanies, Inc. for expertly setting up our YouTube channel and to John Herman whose excellent artistic direction and filming made for a great shoot. And oh, by the way, John is the guy you see in the second spot getting the rough treatment after “speaking in bull.”

Welcome to the debut of “No Bull TV” and please be sure to tell your friends about it!

Acorn Organic Salon Named July “Innovation Rocks!” Winner

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

For some people, the thought of a “green” haircut conjures up visions of Halloween or punk music. However, the type of “green” hairstyling that takes place at a local business has led to Acorn Organic Salon being named the “Innovation Rocks!” Award winner by the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s Business Resource Center for the month of July.

acorn_logo1Operated by Dover natives Laura MacKay and Allison Degan, Acorn Organic Salon emphasizes environmental responsibility in every aspect of their operation from renovations and products to waste management and consumer education. In addition to vetting all hair care and body products for toxicity, safety and organic ingredients, Acorn reuses shopping bags when processing hair color and promotes onsite book and magazine recycling and swapping.

“Innovation isn’t just about creating a new product, it’s about finding a way to do business differently for the betterment of your customers and your community,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “Not only is Acorn Organic Salon providing great hairstyling to their customers, they’ve incorporated environmental friendliness and community service into their business model. This sends a tremendous message to other businesses who are wondering how they can do their part for the environment.”

Acorn Organic Salon has partnered with Matter of Trust, a company that uses hair clippings to soak up the more than 2,600 oil spills that happened across the globe in just the past year alone. All of Acorn’s hair clippings are shipped to Matter of Trust on a monthly basis.

MadgeTech Named June “Innovation Rocks!” Winner

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed the Center for Disease Control about multiple samples of pistachio nuts being contaminated with Salmonella three months ago, a New Hampshire company sprung into action and worked to stop the spread of the infection. As a result of the development of a new durable shield that monitors temperatures of oil roasting nuts, MadgeTech has been named the “Innovation Rocks!” Award winner by the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s Business Resource Center for the month of June.

The Contoocook-based company, a global data logging device manufacturer, recently unveiled a shield that can withstand temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for monitoring and recording the high temperature of oil roasting nuts. Although this product was created for the nut industry, its versatility allows it to be used in other applications such as food processing and conveyor oven monitoring. It can also be placed directly in oil to validate deep frying processes.

“MadgeTech has truly created a product that is ensuring the health of not only New Hampshire citizens, but people around the globe,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “Their ingenuity and creativity is saving lives and ensuring that the food we’re eating is safe for consumption.”
