ITRC Seminar to Center On Global Intellectual Property Protection

Recognizing that protecting property rights abroad can present challenges, the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center will present a seminar titled “Global Intellectual Property Protection” on Thursday, April 1st from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Road).

intellectual-property1Co-sponsored by Sheehan Phinney Bass & Green PA, this seminar will compare U.S. and foreign patent, trademark and copyright protection, paying special attention to how rights can be protected. Other topics to be discussed include intellectual property licensing considerations, how the Internet has changed the landscape for intellectual property issues, what general costs exist for U.S. and foreign patent protection and what issues can prevent securing a patent. Sheehan Phinney Bass & Green PA Attorneys Doug Verge, Peter Nieves and Daniel Fink will be the day’s guest speakers.

“Opportunities in the Middle East” Focus of International Trade Seminar

Recognizing the fact that New Hampshire exported approximately $93M of goods to the Middle East in 2009 alone, the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center (ITRC) will host a seminar titled “Opportunities in the Middle East” at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Road) on Wednesday, March 24th from 9 a.m.-noon.

middle_east_mapThe seminar will feature Kam Shah of the U.S. Commercial Service’s Middle East/North Africa Business Information Center and Zenagui Brahim, New Hampshire Commercial Consul to Morocco discussing the culture, business and religion of the Middle East. The program will begin with an overview of the region followed by an in-depth examination of the business opportunities in the following markets: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Israel and Morocco.

Following the country profiles will be a panel discussion on the culture, history and major religions of the Middle East and how they influence business opportunities. Top exports from the Granite State to the Middle East currently include transportation equipment and parts, medical device technologies, industrial machinery, plastics, aerospace components, food products, iron and steel articles, glass articles and electrical machinery.

International Trade Resource Center Offering NAFTA Training Seminar

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has created the world’s largest free trade area, linking 444 million people producing $17 trillion worth of goods and services. In an effort to help local companies maximize all the opportunities this trade agreement offers, the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center will be holding a NAFTA Training Seminar on Monday, March 8th from 9 a.m.-noon at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Road).

naftaA trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada, NAFTA eliminates tariff or duty rates on most goods of U.S., Mexican or Canadian origin and increases market access and investment opportunities within the free trade area by liberalizing trade restrictions amongst the three nations.

This seminar, led by guest speaker Jeanette Reed, Vice President of Evolutions in Business, will help participants understand the principles of NAFTA, determine if their products qualify and gain insight into necessary documentation.

Automated Export System Training to Be Offered

The New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center will be offering two hands-on training sessions of the Automated Export System (AES) on Tuesday, March 2nd with the first session to take place from 8-11 a.m. and the second from noon-3 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University.

aeslogo2Special guest Kenneth Soo of the AES Branch of the U.S. Census Bureau will be on hand to discuss how New Hampshire companies can avoid penalties and delays by having a firm understanding of how to file electronically through AES.

Topics to be discussed include how to check shipment status, how to make templates, the submission process for Electronic Export Information (EEI) and the ins and outs of AES’ sophisticated editing system.

Export Controls Officials from U.S. Government Speak at Seminar in Portsmouth

A “who’s who” of U.S. export controls agencies will be traveling to Portsmouth to speak at a three-day seminar on U.S. export controls from April 20-22 at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel. Licensing officers from the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), as well as the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), will be on hand over the three days to present up-to-date information on current export controls regulations and answer questions on companies’ export control concerns and issues.

international-tradePresented by the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center (NHITRC) in coordination with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s BIS and U.S. Department of State’s DDTC, the first two days will consist of a “Complying With U.S. Export Controls” overview that will cover Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and how they impact exporters as well as compliance with U.S. export control requirements on commercial goods. The third day will consist of a one-day seminar for companies producing or selling defense articles that will help clarify what the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) governs, what the U.S. Munitions List (USML) is, what it means to a company if a product is ITAR-classified and how to complete a license application or a Commodity Jurisdiction request (CJ).

This event will be the only one in the New England area this year with BIS and DDTC officials presenting. Don’t miss out!

International Protocol to be Explored at Seminar

Looking at someone directly in the eyes might result in a hostile situation in some countries while in other countries, avoiding direct eye contact might provoke the same response. To ensure that New Hampshire business owners are knowledgeable about business customs abroad, the International Trade Resource Center (ITRC) will be holding an International Protocol workshop on Thursday, February 11 from 9 a.m.-noon at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, 172 Pembroke Rd. in Concord.

business_etiquette_training2ITRC Director Dawn Wivell will provide an overview of what cultural aspects are important to know as an American engaging in business and formalities with delegations, business clients and families from different countries and cultures.

For instance, did you know that:
• If you are interacting with the Japanese, it is important to understand that they make decisions by consensus, starting with the younger members of the group;
• The Germans give a firm handshake with one pump while Middle Eastern people will continue to shake your hand throughout a meeting;
• You should always use both hands to present your business card to visitors from Japan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore;
• In Turkey, if taken to a restaurant, it is customary for the person who extended the invitation to pay;
• In Japan, it is considered improper to point with your chopsticks during dinner.

European Union Environmental Directives Seminar Scheduled

Companies exporting electrical or soldered products into the European Union are invited to attend an “Understanding European Union Environmental Directives” workshop at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Road) on Thursday, November 5th from 9 a.m.-noon.

euPresented by the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center, this seminar will feature Bob Straetz, Office of the European Union, U.S. Department of Commerce and will provide an overview of recent changes to environmental regulations and information requirements for exporters to the EU.
 
This half-day introductory seminar will also address the following: EuP (EcoDesign Requirements for Energy Using Products), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) and CE Mark.

ITAR Licensing Issues Workshop Scheduled

Companies exporting defense related goods are invited to attend an ITAR Licensing Issues workshop at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Road) on Tuesday, October 20th from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.  

Presented by the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center in partnership with Kazakis International, this seminar will include a review of export licensing considerations for weapons and defense related products as well as an explanation of registration requirements, license types, the license review process, exemptions and record keeping. 

flagThe International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) covers tanks and military vehicles, aircraft and associated equipment, vessels of war and special naval equipment, military training equipment, protective personnel equipment, military electronics, fire control, auxiliary military equipment, toxicological agents, spacecraft systems and nuclear weapons.

“Doing Business in India” Roundtable Scheduled

With U.S. exports to India topping $18.6 billion in 2008 alone, the New Hampshire International Trade Resource Center will be holding a “Doing Business in India” roundtable at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Road) on Thursday, September 24th from 9 a.m.-noon.

india_new_delhiBoth large and small U.S. firms find India a lucrative market, especially for in the following sectors – aerospace and defense, airport and ground handling, computer technology, education services, electric power and transmission equipment, food processing, medical equipment, telecom equipment, retail and franchising, textile machinery, pollution control equipment and mining equipment. India’s GDP, growing at 6.7% (for 2008-09), makes it one of the fastest growing economies in the world and the second fastest in Asia.  India has potential for a sustained growth of 8-10% for the next couple of years.

Roundtable speakers will include U.S./India Business Council President Ron Somers, Charles Maddox, South Asia Desk, U.S. Commercial Service and Himanshu “Dicky” Desai of the India Association of New Hampshire.

Safety, Security, Aerospace & Defense Initiative Launched

In an effort to target some of the fastest growing worldwide industry sectors, the NH International Trade Resource Center is launching a “Safety & Security and Aerospace & Defense” global export marketing initiative at its new Concord facility (172 Pembroke Road) on Thursday, September 3rd from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

aerospacewrklc2These identified industry sectors are growing exponentially despite the global economic downturn and top markets include India, Japan, Canada, the UK, Germany, UAE, China, France and Brazil. The U.S. is the preeminent supplier of technologically advanced aerospace, defense, safety and security products to the world.

 

At this session, participants will learn how to penetrate the markets looking to procure these high tech products and services. In order to help local companies to enhance their global presence, the NH International Trade Resource Center has developed a global marketing consortium that will identify key marketing avenues and discuss how New Hampshire firms can address those needs.

 

Guest speakers will include Don Bliss, Director of the National Infrastructure Institute’s Center for Infrastructure Expertise, Dawn Wivell, Director of the NH International Trade Resource Center, Karen Wyman, NH International Trade Resource Center International Trade Officer, Gerald Gulley, Senior Vice President, Erudite, Inc. and Justin Oslowski, Director of the U.S. Commercial Service, U.S. Department of Commerce.
