Greenerpalooza III Something to Crow About

Nine Grammy Awards, six top ten studio albums on the Billboard 200 charts, three American Music Awards and an ASCAP Pop Music Award….this year’s Greenerpalooza artist is nothing if not prolific.

Yes, Sheryl Crow is a true American icon who has played to sold out audiences across the world and now she will be headlining this year’s Greenerpalooza III show at the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion in Gilford on August 12th with special guest Colbie Caillat.

sheryl-crow1For those of you who are unaware of what exactly Greenerpalooza is, it’s a celebration of energy efficiency and environmental consciousness in the Granite State. Each year, thousands of concert goers descend upon the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion to visit an eco village showcasing the latest green products while also enjoying some great music.

This year’s Greenerpalooza artist certainly embraces green causes as evidenced by her hit song with Ben Harper titled “Gasoline.” She has also actively supported organizations such as Stop Global Warming and the Nature Conservancy as well as joining Dave Matthews, Guster and other music superstars to form the Green Music Group, a coalition of musicians and fans dedicated to environmental action. Each of her previous studio albums has charted Top 10 and earned at least platinum certification. The seven times platinum Tuesday Night Music Club hit #3 and earned three Grammys–Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the classic “All I Wanna Do.” The album also featured “Strong Enough,” “Can’t Cry Anymore,” and “Leaving Las Vegas.”

1996’s triple platinum Sheryl Crow (#6) earned the Grammy for Best Rock Album and, for “If It Makes You Happy,” Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. 1998’s platinum The Globe Sessions (#5) also garnered the Best Rock Album Grammy, as its “Everyday Is A Winding Road” and “My Favorite Mistake” both reached the Pop Top 20.

The new millennium brought 2002’s platinum C’mon C’mon (#2), whose gold “Soak Up The Sun” peaked in the Top 20 and “Steve McQueen” again nabbed her a Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy. The 2003 greatest hits compilation, the four times platinum The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow, was also a #2 charter, featuring a new recording, a cover of Cat Stevens’ “The First Cut Is The Deepest.” 2005’s platinum Wildflower (#2) featured the duet with Sting, “Always On Your Side.”

Crow will be joined by opener Colbie Caillat whose “CoCo” debuted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart and remained in the top 20 of the chart more than half a year after the CD’s release. The single “Bubbly” spent a staggering 14 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 chart and four weeks atop the Adult Contemporary chart. “Bubbly” has also been certified platinum; signaling sales of more than 2.6 million downloads. The CD’s second single “Realize,” about a friend, who was secretly in love with Caillat, was also a huge hit. And the third is proving to be the charm as “Little Things” is following the path of its predecessors.

NH Business Recruitment Team Spreading Green Jobs Message to MA

On Earth Day, New Hampshire’s business recruitment team will be sharing a simple message with their friends to the south – the grass is always greener on the Granite State side of the fence.

Next Thursday, two New Hampshire Division of Economic Development business recruiters will take part in 92.5 The River’s Earth Day concert on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway in Boston. Featuring “green” vendors, family activities and a concert by national recording stars They Might Be Giants and Citizen Cope, the event offers the economic development team an opportunity to discuss the advantages associated with doing business in New Hampshire.

“With the recent announcement of the University of New Hampshire Green Launching Pad, an innovative green energy technology commercialization program, there has never been a better time to establish an environmentally conscious business in New Hampshire,” New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy said. “The development of good paying green jobs is an emerging reality in today’s business world and the Granite State is fertile ground for companies interested in promoting environmentally sustainable practices.”

Accompanying the Division of Economic Development’s team will be Randy Bryan of ConVerdant Vehicles, a two-year-old Concord, NH-based company that converts pickup trucks and Toyota Priuses to plug-in hybrids. In an effort to draw more visitors to the New Hampshire booth, Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion has donated a pair of tickets to this year’s Greenerpalooza III concert.

No matter what measure is being utilized, the simple truth of the matter is that our good friends and partners at the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion continue to be a “jewel” of the Granite State.

meadowbrook-photoEarlier this week, the Academy of Country Music announced its nominations for the 45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, and for the third time in the past four years, the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion in Gilford finds itself on the list of the top five sites nominated as venue of the year.

An article in this morning’s Union Leader digs deeper into the Meadowbrook story.

“This is an amazing honor for us,” said RJ Harding, president of the Lakes Region concert spot. “We are hoping that the third time is the charm.”

To be nominated, a venue must have had at least six country performances during the year. Meadowbrook in 2009 hosted Sugarland, Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Big and Rich, Dierks Bentley, Jimmy Wayne, Blake Shelton, Craig Morgan, Luke Bryan, Willie Nelson and Chris Young.

The Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion is ranked in the top 50 ampitheaters in the world for attendance for the 2009 season, according to Pollstar, an industry expert in box office attendance.

“We are a mid-sized, privately-owned venue that is competing with 20,000 seat venues owned by national companies to get shows and sell tickets,” said Chris Lockwood, Meadowbrook’s director of marketing.

Harding credits not only industry officials who choose to book acts at Meadowbrook but its loyal following for its success.

“We have the best music fans here in New England,” Harding said. “We could not have done this without them.”

New Hampshire’s “Hip” Factor Growing

On a related yet unrelated note from my last post, the newest edition of The Hippo also featured an interview with Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill who was extremely gracious when asked about the Granite State.

Hill, who will join his bandmates in a concert to be held this Sunday evening, August 23rd at the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion in Gilford, said of the tour’s 2009 final destination in the Lakes Region, “Beautiful part of the country, New Hampshire. It’s our first time playing in Gilford. We’re looking forward to somewhere with a bit of scenery.”

JUDAS PRIESTOn the heels of our sister Division of Travel & Tourism Development’s recent “I Love It Here!” promotion which featured celebrities (author Jodi Piccoult and “Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron among many others) holding signs demonstrating the love of our state, this recent plug for New Hampshire just adds credence to what Granite Staters have known all along – that New Hampshire is a great place to live, complete with cultural amenities, excitement and scenic natural beauty.

New Hampshire economic development officials today invited Massachusetts business owners to get “big and rich” in the Granite State through a special promotion involving a chauffeured limousine, a multi-platinum country music duo and a well honed business pitch.

Over 900 Massachusetts business owners will be receiving an individualized invitation to take part in the “Get Big and Rich in New Hampshire” promotion which will see one lucky winner receive a limousine ride from their home to the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion in Gilford, New Hampshire where they will receive VIP passes to see Grammy Award nominees Big & Rich (“Save a Horse,” “8th of November,” “Coming to Your City,” “Lost in This Moment” and “Wild West Show”), backstage passes and access to a pre-concert reception at Meadowbrook’s Center Stage Buffet with New Hampshire Division of Economic Development business recruiters. Ten other winners will receive tickets to the show and access to the reception.

big-rich-21“At a time when companies are looking for the best possible state to expand or relocate their business, we feel that New Hampshire has a compelling story to tell,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher. “With no sales tax, no income tax, no capital gains tax and a tremendous quality of life, New Hampshire is truly a state where companies can get ‘big and rich.’”

Back in November, the Division of Economic Development unveiled the “Open Invitation” initiative, a business recruitment program aimed at attracting Massachusetts firms to the state.

As part of the initiative, a chauffeured limo provided by Capital City Limousine drives Massachusetts business prospects from their company home to a special luncheon at a Common Man Restaurant location. After a discussion with a New Hampshire business recruiter, the prospect is given an overview of New Hampshire’s business atmosphere before being led on a guided tour of available properties. Later, the company owner has the opportunity to ski at Cannon Mountain, take in a Manchester Monarchs game or attend a concert at the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion before spending a restful evening at the Radisson Hotel Nashua.

“The ‘Big and Rich’ recruitment idea and the Open Invitation initiative are innovative ways to draw attention to what New Hampshire has to offer,” said Pat McDermott, Economic & Community Development Manager at Public Service of New Hampshire, sponsor of the new promotion.  “In challenging economic times, the public and private sector have to join together to think creatively and not rely on old approaches. This promotion is a great step in that regard.”

Though 900 individualized letters are being sent to Massachusetts business owners, the promotion is actually open to any Bay State business interested in registering for the contest.

“As always, New Hampshire stands ready to speak with any companies interested in bringing new jobs and new opportunities to the state,” Boucher said. “We’re very excited about meeting new friends at the Big & Rich concert and showcasing a state where you can grow, thrive and turn great ideas into profitable businesses.”

Grammy nominated Big & Rich formed in Nashville around 1998, when ex-Lonestar vocalist John Rich began collaborating with songwriter Big Kenny. The duo established a performers’ roundtable at a local dive, and the event — dubbed the “Muzik Mafia” — soon gained a reputation for its casual nature and notable special guests including Gretchen Wilson and James Otto. Three releases and eight Top 40 hits later, Big & Rich are a chart topping, critically acclaimed musical force that incorporates country, rock and hip hop into their performances.

Early Jackson Browne fan arrivals were greeted at the entrance of the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion by clusters of local businesses and utility companies setting up stands for the Greenerpalooza II Energy Efficiency event last Thursday.

Together, Meadowbrook and the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, alongside Public Service of New Hampshire, and Ocean Bank, sponsored the evening’s festivities.

While the “green” vendors worked the entrance to the pavilion, the first ever Greenerpalooza award was given out at Meadowbrook’s Center Stage Buffet. The recipient was Richard Ober, chair of the NH Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy Board, for his 30-year dedication to energy efficiency and renewable energy causes.

greenerpalooza-ii-019“We are on the road to a new energy economy in New Hampshire, with better jobs, more jobs, less fossil use and dealing with climate change. A clean environment is a healthy economy,” said Ober. “There’s not another state like New Hampshire working together. We develop programs and policies that will help New Hampshire. Private facilities like Meadowbrook show other companies the way, and that is what’s changing the direction right now.”

Although Ober said he finds it a privilege to win the first Greenerpalooza award, he noted that there are still hundreds and thousands of people working toward a green state and green world.

Steve Boucher, legislative director from the Division of Economic Development, presented the first award to Ober and spoke on his ties with Meadowbrook.

“We have a tremendous relationship with Meadowbrook. When they went green, it allowed artists to come in and use biofuel to run generators. Sustainable energy is where it’s at.”

The audience is also educated, said Boucher.

“We reached 5,000 people with last year’s event,” he said, “and we are reaching 3,000 people today.”

Meadowbrook has been known to pick artists who are interested in going green.

Chris Lockwood, marketing director of Meadowbrook, explained that last year, the facility decided to go green, conserve energy, cut waste, and find alternative methods to run concerts on.

“We have a comprehensive recycling program, where we recycle glass, paper, and aluminum,” Lockwood said. “Our biodegradable cups here are made out of corn and take five years to decompose in the earth, versus 70 to 80 years for plastic cups.”

Biodiesel is also available for an artist’s tour bus or machinery on site in order to keep the air clean.

“Artists can use our green option anytime,” Lockwood said. “It’s the artist’s preference. Some artists think it can be noisy and choose not to. Being green himself, Jackson Browne wanted to use it.”

According to Lockwood, Meadowbrook’s Greenerpalooza event also educates the concert goers who receive an e-mail on the matter prior to the concert.

“When artists are going green, we can make a bigger impact on the audience,” he said.

Meadowbrook also teamed with local radio station The River for one of their two concerts run on Solar Power with the Crosby Stills and Nash band.

“It went really well, despite the rain,” said Lockwood.

Green savvy New Hampshire stores and utility businesses on site ranged from earth-friendly department stores to Laconia’s Energy Services and Technology Program.

Solar Store representatives Jack Bingham and James H. Gamble ran a video to explain how their energy efficient, solar hot water systems worked as an alternative to fossil fuels.

“It’s actually very simple,” said Gamble, who also had water saving toilets on display.

greenerpalooza-ii-024Many department store stands, such as Real Green Goods from Concord, Mother and Child from Nashua, and 1 World Trading Co., displayed stainless steal water bottles, the seemingly new craze in environmental mindfulness, alongside other local and organic items from t-shirts to jump ropes.

Representative Jonathan Gregory from Real Green Goods, with over 700 products, explained that steel Klean Kanteen products don’t leech into water, while leeching may be possible with plastic bottles.

“There’s a lot of estrogen in some plastics,” he said. “Stainless steel doesn’t rust either, like aluminum. Glass is best, but that doesn’t work for everyone.”

greenerpalooza-ii-030Real Green Goods constantly updates their information and changes their products upon research, said Gregory who hinted the new Smart-strip product may soon become popular in conserving electricity.

Other stores, such as Sundance Solar Co. from Warner, focus on small energy system products, selling cell phone chargers, 12 watt blenders, lanterns, and more run solely by solar power.

Richard Ober Honored With Greenerpalooza Award

The board of directors that Richard Ober leads is pronounced “easy,” but his work on that body is anything but. For his leadership role on the Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy (EESE) board as well as other associated efforts to help the Granite State become more energy efficient, Ober was recently named the winner of the inaugural “Greenerpalooza Award.”

Ober was presented with the award last week at the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion in Gilford as part of Greenerpalooza II, a celebration of New Hampshire’s “green” technologies and initiatives. Sponsored by Ocean Bank and Public Service of New Hampshire, in coordination with the New Hampshire Business Resource Center, WXRV 92.5 “The River” and Meadowbrook, the evening’s festivities included a special “eco village” on the Meadowbrook midway where New Hampshire businesses and members of the general public learned how to “go greener” amidst the backdrop of a Jackson Browne/Shawn Colvin concert.

greenerpalooza-ii-021Ober was recognized for his 25 years of non-profit leadership, public policy expertise and dedication to sustainable energy. As the NH Charitable Foundation’s Vice President of Civic Leadership and Communications, he works to unite public and private partners to address the state’s most significant challenges including energy policy, affordable housing, transportation, state park management, substance abuse, and deliberative democracy.

Before coming to the Charitable Foundation in January 2008, he was Executive Director of the Monadnock Conservancy (2001–2007) and a senior staff member of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (1985–2001). He has served as a member or chair of more than a dozen non-profit and public boards including the EESE where he diligently strives to promote and coordinate energy efficiency, demand response and sustainable energy programs in the state.

“Richard Ober’s impact on bringing energy efficiency to the forefront of public policy is nothing short of incredible,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “I can think of no more fitting recipient of this inaugural award that celebrates those dedicated to ensuring New Hampshire’s sustainable energy future.”

Energy Efficiency Efforts to be Celebrated at Greenerpalooza II

With environmental awareness becoming more and more of a business and social priority, fears are lessening about the planet “running on empty.” However, Jackson Browne and the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion still want to do their part to keep eco-friendliness on the top of everyone’s mind.

greenerpalooza-2009-photo-shoot-001On July 16th, Ocean Bank and Public Service of New Hampshire, in coordination with the New Hampshire Business Resource Center, will present Greenerpalooza II, a celebration of New Hampshire’s energy efficiency efforts at Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion. Set against the backdrop of the much-anticipated Jackson Browne and Shawn Colvin concert, the evening’s festivities will include a special “eco village” on the Meadowbrook midway where New Hampshire businesses and members of the general public will be able to learn how to “go greener.”

“Energy efficiency is an absolutely critical subject for businesses and residents alike,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher. “When you take a closer look at your energy usage, not only are you helping to protect the environment, you’re improving your bottom line. Energy efficiency equals cost savings.”

Greenerpalooza II is designed to showcase New Hampshire products, services and programs that can help individuals and businesses save energy and dollars.

According to Janet Brewer, Vice President and Director of Community Development at Ocean Bank, “Greenerpalooza is a great way for us to celebrate our Energy Efficiency Program and the terrific partnership we enjoy with the New Hampshire Business Resource Center, while pushing the green initiative further. As part of the eco-village at Meadowbrook, we’ll be on hand so attendees can find out more about this program, as well as about the many different alternatives there are in New Hampshire to help reduce energy consumption.”

Pat McDermott, Economic and Community Development Manager for PSNH, added that the utility is pleased to support the event.

“From an energy-efficiency, environmental and sustainability point of view, the timing couldn’t be better for this event; and Meadowbrook is a great example of how a New Hampshire business is doing the right thing for the environment,” he said.

NY4014Meadowbrook was the natural choice for the venue given President R.J. Harding’s concern about the environment. Under his leadership, Meadowbrook has changed the way it does business so it will have the least possible negative impact on the environment.

“We still have a lot of green improvements we want to make as a venue, but for us, the opportunity to create awareness and educate our customers is one of the biggest impacts we can have,” said Meadowbrook Marketing Director Chris Lockwood who was part of the team overseeing last year’s Phase I improvements. “That awareness has led to the introduction of some great partners like WXRV “The River,” one of only two solar powered radio stations in the country. It has also gained the attention of artists who are concerned about the environment and welcome Meadowbrook’s green efforts.”

This year Jackson Browne’s tour has asked to run the sound off Meadowbrook’s biodiesel generator. The tour also has converted their lighting system to LED lights which are much better for the environment.
