Growth and sustainability is the theme of the 7th Annual Governor’s Advanced Manufacturing and High Technology Summit scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 13th from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Grappone Conference Center.
Coordinated by the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, the New Hampshire Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NH MEP) and the Business & Industry Association of New Hampshire and sponsored by Citizens Bank, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Association for Operations Management and New Hampshire Business Review, the summit will provide participants with tips for accelerating reliable growth in their businesses.
Morning speaker Beth Goldstein, author of The Ultimate Small Business Marketing Toolkit, will lead participants in an interactive discussion on the art of developing a powerful brand based on customers’ needs, spending patterns, pain points and the value they derive from your company.
Later workshops will center around the following subjects: “Case Studies on Lean Green and Energy” (Jay Fallon, Continuous Improvement Manager, BAE Systems and Art Christianson, Vice President of Manufacturing, High Liner Foods), “Growing Your International Business: Successful Export Growth Strategies” (Michael Stone, Stone & Associates, Dawn Wivell, Director, NH International Trade Resource Center and Justin Oslowski, Director, NH Export Assistance Center, U.S. Department of Commerce), and “Introducing a System for Reliable Growth” (Patricia Giavara, Assistant Director and Growth Coach with the Vermont Manufacturing Extension Center and Jane Ely, NH MEP Project Manager).
Keynote speaker Michael Reopel, Principal of Deloitte Consulting, will present the results of his report “Reexamining Advanced Manufacturing in a Networked World – Prospects for Resurgence in New England.” This report identified five subsectors within the New England manufacturing industry that are poised for growth, discussed the challenges that these industry subsectors face and identified the opportunities they provide for sustainable economic growth even during these difficult economic times.
The registration fee for the summit is $85 per participant; lunch is included. Interested parties can sign up online by visiting www.nhbia.org’s “Calendar” page and clicking on October 13th. For more information, call Zenagui Brahim or Cathy Doty at the NH MEP at (603) 226-3200.

Here’s some excerpts from a great story from our buddies at the New Hampshire Business Review:
NH 8th in Internet Speed
New Hampshire has been clocked as one of the states with the fastest Internet connection speed, according to a 2009 study by the Communications Workers of America.
The Granite State came in eighth, beating out most of New England.
The CWA measured some 2,426 tests in New Hampshire, with an average download speed of 7.7 megabits per second and upload connectivity of about 1.5 mbps.
This year’s results are significantly better than 2008, when New Hampshire ranked 16th, with download speeds of 4.7 mbps and uploads of 974 kilobits per second.
Delaware had the fastest download speeds in the country, at 9.9 mbps, followed by Rhode Island at 9.8 mbps, and New Jersey at 8.9 mbps. Puerto Rico had nation’s slowest speeds, ranking 53rd, at 1.0 mbps, followed by U.S. Virgin Islands, 1.2 mbps, and Montana, 2.3 mbps.
CWA’s annual test measures average Internet connection speeds and compares them to tests conducted in Germany, Japan, Netherlands, South Korea and Sweden.
According to the CWA, the United States ranked 15th behind other industrialized nations in the percent of the population subscribing to broadband.

Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs was just an appetizer. The main course in the battle of the sexes will actually take place on Friday, June 5th at 7:30 p.m. as a team of six female business professionals takes on a team of six male business professionals as part of the Second Annual New Hampshire Business Bowl at The Acting Loft Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
During the course of the Manchester Wolves – Albany Firebirds af2 football game, two teams of six local business professionals will take part in fun and competitive “office Olympics” style events which will test their teamwork skills. The women’s team will be led by Print Savvy CEO Lisa Landry while North American Equipment Upfitters President Michael Dunican will be at the helm of the men’s squad. The winner of the competition will receive the second annual Business Bowl trophy, tickets to Canobie Lake Park and tickets to Wolves games for the remainder of the 2009 season.
“Last year’s Business Bowl demonstrated the great teamwork that it takes to build a winning organization and we’re glad to be able to introduce an interesting new twist to this year’s event,” said Manchester Wolves General Manager Stephanie Bike. “We all know that men and women each contribute to the success of local businesses and play a vital role in writing a Granite State success story both in the boardroom and on the playing field.”
New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher added that the Business Bowl is part of his agency’s desire to reach out to new clients in innovative and non-traditional ways.
“Rather than hosting a regular business after hours or scheduling a typical ‘getting to know you’ networking session, we want to engage the business community in an enjoyable and interesting way,” he said. “Building new relationships and establishing partnerships is supposed to be fun – who really gets jazzed up by business as usual?”
Prior to the Business Bowl event, the Business Resource Center, the Wolves, event sponsor Cartridge World and media partners New Hampshire Business Review and WGAM will host a free business appreciation reception for the first 50 business respondents at Piccola Italia Ristorante at 5:30 p.m. To make reservations for the free reception or purchase tickets to the game (at the special Business Bowl price of $10 per ticket), contact the Manchester Wolves at 627-9653 or sbike@manchesterwolves.com.
