A Decade of Dedication – Thanks Manchester Monarchs!

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Ten years ago, a new American Hockey League franchise was born in the Queen City. With an enterprising president (Hello Jeff Eisenberg!), a business model built around providing the best possible fan experience and a region that quickly became christened “Monarchs Country,” the Manchester Monarchs became not only a thriving business in the state, but part of the fabric of our community.

monarchsWinners of the 2005 PRISM award, a designation earned by the top minor league franchise in the country, the Monarchs have always been about the fans. Whether it’s sending players into the classroom to encourage reading, coordinating a clothing drive for the needy or hosting a “teddy  bear toss” to provide toys for underprivileged youngsters, the Monarchs have always been cognizant of the fact that success in the community is just as important as success on the ice.

Since its inception in 2001, the Monarchs Care Foundation (Hello Cheryl Abbott!) has donated more than $1.6 million in monetary and in-kind contributions to charitable organizations throughout New Hampshire. Think about that for a second…..$1.6 million. That’s an awful lot of food for the hungry, equipment for youth sports and donated items for organizations ranging from the Norris Cotton Cancer Center to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

And let’s not forget the team’s success on the ice. In their ten year history, the Monarchs have only failed to make the playoffs once and made it to the Eastern Conference finals last year, falling just short of the Calder Cup finals.  They are perennial contenders and have sent dozens of players to the NHL including Mike Cammellari, George Parros, Dustin Brown, Jonathan Quick, Kevin Westgarth, Jonathan Bernier, Tom Kotsopoulos and many others.

What would be the perfect birthday gift for the team that has provided this much joy to the Granite State? How’s about a visit or two to the Verizon Wireless Arena this season? Games are affordably priced, the action is unparalleled and the entertainment value is off the charts. If you haven’t made the trip to Monarchs Country in awhile, mark a date on the calendar for your return and enjoy some great AHL hockey. Thanks for your decade of dedication and Happy Birthday Monarchs!!

– Steve Boucher, Communications & Legislative Director (and Monarchs Charter Season Ticket Holder!)

P.S. Join “New Hampshire Today’s” Jack Heath and NH Department of Resources & Economic Development Commissioner George Bald for the “First Class Business” segment featuring Monarchs President Darren Abbott next Wednesday, November 3rd on WTPL 107.7 FM at 4 p.m. Darren will talk about the team’s success on the ice this season and discuss how the Monarchs have been able to grow and sustain their business over the years.

Three PTAP Clients Find Success at Northeast Regional Council Matchmaker Event

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Our Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAP) team might be the best kept secret in state government. A dedicated group of business professionals, our PTAP staff consistently help New Hampshire businesses to sell their products and services to the federal and state government, earning millions of dollars in contracts along the way.

Here’s a great narrative from PTAP Program Manager David Pease regarding the success of his team at the Northeast Regional Council Matchmaker event recently held in Portland, ME.

PTAP Program Manager David Pease

PTAP Program Manager David Pease

The entire NH-PTAP staff participated, supporting 112 New Hampshire small business registrants representing 83 companies. New Hampshire was the most represented state at the event, with Maine and Massachusetts a close second and third. Small businesses came from as far as Texas, Minnesota and Florida to seek sales opportunities with Federal and State agencies and large Prime contractors.

The first day of the event was dedicated to training. Agency small business specialists, contract specialists and contract officers and Prime contractor Small Business Liaison Officers (SBLO) received a six-hour program that provides up-to-date details on all aspects of small business programs, including subcontracting programs, participation programs, and reporting via eSRS.

In the afternoon, a separate training session was presented by the regional PTACs,  for 195 small business people, providing an overview of all aspects of Federal government contracting. Approximately 75 people stayed on for an additional program specifically for small businesses that were new to the Matchmaker process.

On the Wednesday Matchmaker Day, 27 government agencies and 55 Prime contractors staffed 82 tables, as hundreds of small businesses vied for 10-minute appointments. Each table was scheduled for thirty-seven 10-minute appointment slots, but many of the agencies and Primes made opportunities for far more contacts – DEW Construction (Hanover, Williston VT.) recorded 62 sessions with small businesses. By the end of the day, we had word that at least three New Hampshire small businesses would be awarded subcontracts within one week as a direct result of the matchmaker. This rapid success is very unusual, and is encouraging.

For those not busy on the main Matchmaker floor, there were breakout rooms for small businesses to get together or to work solo, using the hotel’s wireless internet service. There were also a variety of breakout sessions, including one featuring recent changes in eMall. Lieutenant Commander Phillip Deboe,  Deputy Program Manager for DLA eMall, answered questions, and with Jerry Smith, OSBU Regional Director for GSA, clarified recent changes that both agencies have implemented that are significantly impacting companies in the region.

For the Primes, PTACs and Federal Agencies, a third day was dedicated to a half-day open meeting of the Regional Council. Presentations were made by Steven Kempf, Commissioner, GSA Federal Acquisition Service (FAS), the portion of GSA that deals with government-wide procurement; Sean Crean, Director, U.S. Department of Navy, Office of Small Business Programs; and William Shear, Director, GAO, Financial Markets and Community Investment.

PTAP participation in this event and the commitment of time and resources was well justified by the knowledge gained and the positive outcomes for New Hampshire companies.

Congrats to David Pease, Martha Keene, Kathy Frenette and Amanda Duquette, our tremendous PTAP team!!!

The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the banquet and will earn the prestigious NHHTC Product of the Year crystal trophy, which was designed for the Council by Pepi Hermann. The trophy and the finalist’s winning product will be on display in a highly visible location at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.

No Bull Business Blog Named Best of Class in Northeast

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

When all was said and done, the business and economic development community decided that a “bull free” news diet was in order. The New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s “No Bull Business Blog” has been named “Best of Class” in the “News Communications” category of the Northeastern Economic Developers Association’s (NEDA) 2010 Literature and Promotions Competition.

brc_nhbr_nobull1The Division of Economic Development’s communications efforts were recognized at NEDA’s recent 54th Annual Conference at the Renaissance Providence in Rhode Island with three awards in total, an “excellent” rating in the “Single Print Ad” category as well as a “best of class” rating in both the “News Communications” and “Print Ad Campaign” categories. The print ad campaign was designed by Square Spot Design of Manchester, New Hampshire.

“This is great news for the New Hampshire business community,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher. “We’ve learned that businesses want a departure from acronyms and jargon and favor having their news presented to them in an entertaining way. By standing out, we’re delivering the message that New Hampshire welcomes innovation and celebrates creativity.”

The Northeastern Economic Developers Association (NEDA) was formed in 1956 to promote economic and industrial development in the Northeastern region of the United States. The association encourages an informal exchange of ideas and serves as a medium by which its members can benefit from the experiences of other professionals.

Albany Engineered Composites Plans Expansion in Rochester

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Governor John Lynch today joined state and Rochester city officials in announcing the creation of 500 new jobs in the city over the next several years.

albany_international-logoGovernor Lynch made the announcement at Albany Engineered Composites, an aerospace composites manufacturer and subsidiary of Albany International, which employs about 225 workers at its existing Rochester facility.

After working directly with the state over the last two years, Albany has decided to construct a new plant next to the existing facility in Rochester, which will directly result in 300 new jobs.

Anticipated additional investment in Albany’s existing operations, in addition to its new facility, is expected to create a total of about 500 jobs in the area over the next several years.

aecbanner2“As Governor, my top priority is getting people back to work today and investing in our workers so New Hampshire can attract companies and compete for good jobs. This major announcement today is a direct result of our hard work,” Governor Lynch said.

“Albany could have chosen to locate this new facility elsewhere, but they recognized that we have a winning economic strategy in place here in New Hampshire. We worked intensively with the company over the past two years to bring this new plant and hundreds of jobs to Rochester,” Governor Lynch said.

The company also announced today it was relocating its corporate headquarters from New York to New Hampshire.

“These two announcements reflect the growing importance of AEC to Albany International’s future. It also reflects the strength of the partnership that we have forged with the city of Rochester and the state of New Hampshire,” said Joseph Morone, Albany’s President and CEO. “We are especially appreciative of the efforts of Governor John Lynch and his administration. The new jobs that our new plant will create are the direct result of his efforts on behalf of state of New Hampshire.”

The State, through the Community College System and Employment Security, has committed to working with Albany to provide job training and other services to help find the workers for these new highly skilled jobs.

“The new facility will employ cutting edge technology and techniques and we will make sure our workers are ready. That’s what we do so well in New Hampshire,” Governor Lynch said. “Through our Job Training Fund, we have provided training to more than 7,000 workers from hundreds of companies over the last three years. Having the ability to train and retrain a skilled workforce is one of the reasons Albany has chosen New Hampshire.”

Employment at the Rochester location, which has grown by 23 percent over the past two years and is now at 225, is expected to increase by the later part of the decade to approximately 700, making it the company’s largest global manufacturing operation.

“Rochester is proud to be chosen as Albany’s corporate headquarters and as the location for its new facility and expanded workforce. We have supported their growth in the past and continue that commitment to advanced technology and manufacturing,” said Rochester Mayor T.J. Jean. “We sincerely thank the State of New Hampshire, Rochester’s economic development team and the leadership of the City Council for encouraging and supporting this opportunity.”

“This is great news for the City of Rochester and for the region as a whole,” said Department of Resources & Economic Development Commissioner George Bald. “Job creation is the key to successful and thriving communities and we’re pleased that Albany Engineering Composites is building upon its investment in New Hampshire. Albany is a top-notch company and has created a center of excellence in the world of composites. We are indeed fortunate they are located in our state.”

“As we emerge from this recession, my focus has been getting people back to work now and making sure New Hampshire is positioned to continue to lead the nation’s economy in the future. This exciting announcement helps further those goals. It is going to help put people back to work. In addition to the hundreds of new skilled manufacturing jobs, there will be many men and women in the construction industry building this new plant and this project will also expand the tax base for the city,” Governor Lynch said.

“This is a great day for the State of New Hampshire,” Governor Lynch said.
