NH Invites Insurance Companies to Sow the Seeds of Business Success

Friday, October 15th, 2010

For the third consecutive year, the NH Insurance Department and NH Division of Economic Development will join exhibitors at the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) Annual Conference, to be held October 17-19, 2010 at the Hilton Baltimore in Baltimore, MD. The state welcomes conference attendees to visit booth #9 and “sow the seeds of business success” by accepting a gift of black-eyed Susans, the seeds of which are embedded in plantable business cards.

acli_logoBusiness Development Manager Michael Bergeron is representing the state at this year’s conference. Serving NH citizens since 1997, Bergeron works directly with businesses considering relocating or expanding to New Hampshire. He provides a wide range of services, ranging from site analysis and selection to facilitating state financing and incentive packages. In the insurance industry alone, he has helped nine insurance companies redomesticate to New Hampshire in the last two years.

“As the most livable state in the nation, New Hampshire offers an exceptional business environment for insurance companies,” notes Roy Duddy, Interim Director for the NH Division of Economic Development. “With the lowest insurance premium tax in the Northeast, no personal income tax or sales tax, and ready access to skilled labor, businesses and employees alike enjoy the many rewards of working and playing in the Granite State.”

Joining Bergeron at this year’s ACLI conference is Allen Voivod of social marketing company Epiphanies, Inc., which has helped the Division of Economic Development double their website traffic and create one of the largest economic development presences on Facebook in the US. Voivod will be interviewing industry leaders and capturing highlights to share on the state’s new industry-specific “Redomesticate NH” social channels on Facebook and Twitter.

Window Imagination, formerly located in Melrose, MA for over 25 years, recently purchased a 4,800 square foot commercial building in Lancaster.

Owners Thad and Jayne Kallas said that they decided to relocate to New Hampshire to escape the cost of doing business in Massachusetts and to enjoy the quality of life northern New Hampshire has to offer.

“Even though we come from Massachusetts, we are fiscal conservatives and were fed up with the political environment in Massachusetts and the lack of any kind of support for small business,”  Jayne Kallas said.

Window Imagination manufactures custom designed and finished wood and metal drapery hardware which hangs in many homes throughout the country and has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, Traditional Home and New England Home magazines.  In addition to the three people they currently employ, they plan on hiring a shipper this fall and hope to re-introduce their upholstery division in the near future.

“Michael Bergeron, Business Development Manager for the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, was invaluable in this move,” Jayne Kallas said. “His assistance with obtaining financing on our building and his knowledge and accessibility to small business owners like us, made all the difference.”

State Business Recruitment Team Takes to the Road

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Nearly 30 commercial real estate brokers recently joined the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s business recruitment team on a regional bus tour of available facilities in Farmington, Rochester, Dover, Somersworth and Portsmouth.

“Telling someone about a great site for a business expansion or relocation is one thing, but showing them allows them to get a real feel for the property,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “In addition to providing an overview of available commercial real estate, we also had a captive audience to speak to about free State services that can help their clients’ businesses to thrive in New Hampshire.”

broker-tour-june-2010-farmington-to-pease-013Sponsored by Public Service of New Hampshire, the Summer Real Estate Tour gave participants insight into larger commercial projects taking place throughout the state and also provided introductions to economic development representatives from each municipality. While on the bus route between stops, State Business Development Manager Michael Bergeron gave a presentation on area demographics, labor needs and housing trends.

“I found the economic development representatives from the Seacoast towns to be very informative and positive in their presentations,” said Leonard, Lee & Company Vice President Pam Lynch. “I was very impressed to see the amount of new construction and business expansions in the area, especially in the manufacturing and medical office sectors. Those are the types of jobs that will drive New Hampshire’s economic recovery.”

“Vowing to learn at least one new thing every day, I was ecstatic to have attended the bus tour,” added Bob Anderson of Prudential Verani Commercial. “With experts from many different Seacoast cities and towns, this was a very eventful and informative trip.”

Public Service of New Hampshire Economic & Community Development Manager Pat McDermott welcomed the chance to participate after helping to coordinate similar tours in the North Country as well as southern New Hampshire.

“Providing commercial real estate brokers with the information they need to make wise decisions for their clients creates economic development opportunities in New Hampshire,” McDermott said. “New businesses mean new jobs and increased economic prosperity for all citizens.”

Business Tip Helps in the Creation of Local Jobs

Friday, February 19th, 2010

A business tip by the State’s Business Development Manager helped lead to the opening of two local restaurants that hired 51 workers.

Michael Bergeron, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s Business Development Manager, provided technical assistance regarding a tax credit program to Five Guys Burgers and Fries which assisted in their decision to open a location in Nashua on 341 Amherst Street.

“In meeting with the restaurant owners, I wanted to be sure to let them know about all of the incentive programs that are available to them,” Bergeron said. “I’m thrilled that they were able to take advantage of the tax credit program and create a business that is helping New Hampshire citizens find solid full-time jobs.”

five-guysFive Guys Burgers and Fries utilized the Enterprise Revitalization Zone Tax Credit Program (ERZ) by locating their business in an ERZ designated area in Nashua. With the ERZ Program, a business may be eligible for tax credits to be used against their Business Profit Tax and Business Enterprise Tax in a qualifying ERZ Program project. It is a two step process, whereby the municipality first applies for the designation based upon specific criteria, and secondly, a business applies for the actual tax credit.

ZAGAT survey rated every year since 2001, Five Guys Burgers and Fries now has two Granite State locations, one in Nashua and the other located at 1111 South Willow Street in Manchester. The Manchester eatery, slated for a March 1st grand opening, will feature 100 seats and 15 delicious burger toppings.

“The Division of Economic Development was very instrumental in educating me on how a small business can benefit from the many resources that the State of New Hampshire has to offer,” said Five Guys Owner Cort Mendez. “In today’s difficult economic environment, it’s great to know that the Division of Economic Development shares common ground in wanting small business to be successful. Programs such as the ERZ offer a great advantage to assisting small businesses in creating jobs in New Hampshire.”

Smiles Lead to Business Development

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

To start off your day on a high note, I thought I’d share this excellent article written by Tom West that appeared in today’s Nashua Telegraph. It details NH Division of Economic Development Business Development Manager Michael Bergeron’s remarks to the Hudson Board of Selectmen on how to make their community more attractive to site selectors and businesses looking for a new home.

Development Official Advises Smiles Matter

Selectmen received some common sense tips on economic development from a state official who said a simple smile from a Town Hall employee could make the difference for a company contemplating a move to Hudson.

Michael Bergeron of the state Department of Resources and Economic Development gave the board a 30-minute tutorial on the best ways to woo business in a stagnant economy.

bergeron1Bergeron said some companies will send an employee into the Town Hall of a community they’re thinking of moving to just to see what kind of impression the staff makes.

“A smile can make all the difference,’’ he said, recounting how he visited one town and couldn’t get a worker behind a plate of bullet-proof glass to even look at him.

According to Assistant Town Administrator Mark Person, officials have made economic development No. 1 on their to-do list for 2010.

In an effort to fill Sagamore Industrial Park on Route 3A and the Clement Road Industrial Park along Route 111, the parks have been designated as Economic Revitalization Zones. The program allows for businesses within the parks to receive tax credits when expanding, Pearson said.

The program stopped taking applications Jan. 29, but two local companies have applied for credits or loans available through the state, he said.

What Hudson needs to remember, Bergeron said, is companies aren’t interested in towns where municipal boards are constantly bickering and building regulations so onerous that its seems to take forever to get anything done.

“That’s not going to fly today,’’ he said.

Networking is essential between the town, the local Chamber of Commerce and neighboring communities, he said, adding that a good Web site is an integral part of marketing any municipality.

The Hudson Web site, which the town recently upgraded with a new focus on economic development, is effective, he said, but “it needs refreshment in terms of town images,’’ that reflect the local quality of life.

The town has a beautiful new library and good schools, he said, that are assets the town needs to project via the Internet and social media, such as Facebook.

“Quality of life is a great asset for the town of Hudson,’’ Bergeron said, “and you need to keep a positive attitude and not apologize for the things that are not your strength.’’

As an example, he used the small town of Colebrook, 10 miles from the Canadian border, which he says is always coming up with ideas for growth, despite constant struggles.

“They’re always calling, saying, We’ve got a great idea, What you think?’ Bergeron said. “Instead of saying, ‘What can you do for me,’ they say, ‘look at what we can do for you.’ ’’

Ohhhhhhhhh Canada

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

drummondville-mission-015The Division of Economic Development recently ventured north of the border to Drummondville, Quebec to hold a private dinner for 53 Canadian companies interested in learning more about doing business in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire Department of Resources & Economic Development Commissioner George Bald was the host of the event along with State Business Development Manager Michael Bergeron and North Country Business Services Specialist Beno Lamontagne. Marie-Josee Vaillant and Marie-Soleil Gueymard of Colebrook-based Kheops International were also on hand, sharing their valuable experience of moving their company from Canada to New Hampshire.

drummondville-mission-005“We were overwhelmed by the great response we received from the Canadian companies in attendance,” Bergeron said. “They were thrilled that we conducted the business portion of the dinner in their native language and that we had so much to offer in terms of valuable information. I’m very hopeful that we were able to plant the seed that will result in a few companies taking a much closer look at Coos County as they plan a business expansion or relocation.”

The sales presentation was sponsored through a federal grant coordinated through the North Country Council.

The New Hampshire Division of Economic Development’s business recruitment team took to the road yesterday as they led 28 southern tier real estate brokers on a bus tour of industrial properties in the Lakes Region.

“This was an excellent way for commercial real estate brokers to see a part of the state that they may not be familiar with,” said Public Service of New Hampshire Economic and Community Development Manager Pat McDermott. “Education is key in helping clients to find the right business location and this tour was pretty rich with information regarding the region.”

“The Franklin/Laconia region is an excellent area to expand business,” added New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Business Development Manager Michael Bergeron. “It has affordable space with an excellent quality of life and abundant cultural amenities. It offers the best of all worlds.”
