Preparing for Tax Season

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

A little education and some advanced planning can prevent tax obligation surprises and allow savings opportunities for self-employed people and owners of small businesses.

taxesLinda Snow, a certified public accountant with Snow Consulting & Tax, PLLC, in Concord, has been offering sound advice to small businesses for more than 20 years. As a small-business owner, she understands the challenges of negotiating finances, tax planning, and overall operations and management responsibilities.

Snow knows it is important for small-business owners to be able answer the questions:

How do I calculate my business’s monthly cash needs, including my income tax obligations?
What are my tax reporting and payment responsibilities as a small-business owner?
What are tax credits, and does my business qualify for any?

MicroCredit-NH and its partners around the state are hosting a FREE series of tax workshops with Ms. Snow this fall. These workshops have been opened to ALL MicroCredit-NH members at no cost. Lunch will be provided and each participant will receive a detailed workbook.

Space at each workshop is limited and available on a first-come basis, and preregistration is required.

Organized by the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development (DRED) and hosted by Senator Molly Kelly (D-Keene), this session will discuss how towns can recruit new companies to the area and will also provide an overview of free government incentives for in-state businesses. Guest speakers will include New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Business Development Manager Michael Bergeron and Business Recruiter Cindy Harrington as well as New Hampshire Business Finance Authority Director Jack Donovan and MicroCredit-NH Regional Manager Peggy O’Keefe.

“This is a great opportunity for local business owners and prospering entrepreneurs to learn what’s available in terms of resources and programs,” said Senator Kelly. “Economic development is of vital importance to community vitality and this presentation will provide participants with an excellent forum to discuss new ideas and growth strategies.”

There are various State incentives available to the business community including energy audits, ERZ tax credits, opportunities to sell products and services to the federal government and research and development tax credits.

“Having knowledge of these opportunities can help a company to grow rapidly and maximize profits,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy. “Getting educated makes perfect business sense.”

Public Service of New Hampshire is sponsoring free light refreshments at the session. To pre-register and learn more, contact Michael Bergeron at (603) 271-2591 or mbergeron@dred.state.nh.us.

Maximizing Your Web Presence Focus of Free Workshop

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

With 90 percent of online traffic being generated via search engines, it’s imperative for companies to ensure that their business’ names fight their way to the top of the Web pile. With that in mind, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development will be joining together with Windhill Design to hold a “Maximizing Your Web Presence” workshop at the Division of Economic Development (172 Pembroke Rd.) on Thursday, September 17th from 9 a.m.-noon.

“Having an effective Web site that is easily found and well positioned is an absolute necessity for business growth,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Communications & Legislative Director Steve Boucher. “There are literally millions of options for customers searching for services in cyberspace so now more than ever, it’s important to stand out from the crowd.”

As part of the interactive workshop, participants will develop valuable skills in keyword research, discover how their site stands now in comparison to their online competition and gain an introduction to Pay-Per-Click, local search and social media.

link-head-shot“This will be an excellent overview of how online promotion and marketing can influence a company’s bottom line. Having an effective Web presence drives sales and profit,” said guest presenter Link Moser, owner of Gilford, NH-based Windhill Design. Moser, who founded Windhill in 1996, has been a guest speaker at several events including workshops and classes for the MicroCredit NH, Hannah Grimes Marketplace, Amoskeag Business Incubator, NH Technical Institute and the NH Farm & Forest Expo. His own company Web site, www.windhill.com, consistently ranks at the top of Google for such phrases like “NH web design,” “NH web designer,” and “NH website design.”

Admission to this workshop is free but is limited to the first 40 registrants. To register, please email your name, company name, address, telephone number and Web site (if any) to Leslie Sherman at the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development at lsherman@dred.state.nh.us.
