Going grgreenerpalooza_image1een doesn’t just help save the planet, it also makes perfect business sense. That’s the message delivered by New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy in announcing plans for the 2010 Greenerpalooza Award.

The Greenerpalooza Award is given each year to a New Hampshire-based person, organization or initiative dedicated to energy efficiency. It recognizes the accomplishments of those who support and promote green efforts throughout the Granite State and who work tirelessly to ensure that New Hampshire maintains its position as a state which celebrates sustainability.

“As one of the ten greenest states in the nation, New Hampshire is home to a number of great individuals and organizations dedicated to finding solutions for the sustainability of our planet,” Duddy said. “We look forward to receiving a lot of nominations and being able to recognize the good work that’s taking place in the Granite State.”

Last year’s Greenerpalooza Award winner was Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy board member Richard Ober. Ober was recognized for his 25 years of non-profit leadership, public policy expertise and dedication to sustainable energy. As the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Vice President of Civic Leadership and Communications, he continues to work to unite public and private partners to address the state’s most significant challenges including energy policy, affordable housing, transportation, state park management, substance abuse, and deliberative democracy.

Co-sponsored by Public Service of New Hampshire and Citizens Bank in coordination with the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development and media sponsor New Hampshire Business Review, Greenerpalooza III is a celebration of New Hampshire’s energy efficiency efforts. Over 5,000 concert goers will not only get to enjoy a concert from a multi-platinum artist, they will also be able to visit a special eco village on the Meadowbrook midway where vendors will be extolling the virtues of wind and solar power as well as other alternative energy sources.

Holase Inc. Named June “Innovation Rocks!” Winner

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

The creation of the most compact traffic signal in the world gave the New Hampshire Business Resource Center a green light to present its June “Innovation Rocks!” award to Holase Incorporated.

uptmsThe Newmarket-based company, which designs, manufactures and sells information systems solutions for public safety, first responders and homeland security, created the Ultra Portable Traffic Management System (UPTMS), a traffic signal that fits inside a duffel bag and easily stows in the trunk of a compact car. Motorcycle Week Revving Up in the Granite State

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Are you currently hearing a Steppenwolf soundtrack blaring in your head? If “Born to be Wild” is cascading from the right side of your brain to the left causing involuntary toe tapping and fist pumping, it’s because Laconia Motorcycle Week is now upon us.

Last week, I had the good fortune to speak at the press conference marking the opening of the 87th Anniversary of Laconia Motorcycle Week at the Weirs Beach Lobster Pound. I joined Governor Lynch, my colleague Henry Goode from the New Hampshire Division of Travel & Tourism Development, Senator Bob Letourneau, Senator Deb Reynolds and representatives from several law enforcement agencies in welcoming our guests to the state.

Outgoing Laconia Motorcycle Week Association Board President Paul Lessard receives the Fritzie Baer Award for his dedication to Motorcycle Week from Governor John Lynch as Jennifer Anderson and Charlie St. Clair of the Motorcycle Week Association look on.

I’d like to share my remarks in an effort to reach out to any visitors who might find their way to this blog during their travels to New Hampshire (Pssssstttt…..we’d really like your business and would be happy to you set up shop in the Most Livable State in the nation):

“Good morning and thanks very much for giving me the opportunity to welcome friends old and new to the 87th anniversary of Laconia Motorcycle Week.

Motorcycle Week is one of the most highly anticipated events in the state each year and I’d like to personally thank Jennifer Anderson, Charlie St. Claire and Paul Lessard for their hard work in consistently raising the bar in terms of the potential of motorcyle week in New Hampshire. You are all tremendous ambassadors for the state and we salute you for your efforts in building motorcycle week into a world class event.

You’ve already heard from my friend and colleague Henry Goode from the Division of Travel & Tourism Development who told you about how the State of New Hampshire reaches out to attract visitors to Motorcycle Week – I’m here to tell you that once we capture our guests as visitors, we want them to stay here and build their businesses in the Granite State.

Last year, one of our business recruiters, Cindy Harrington and I were fortunate enough to take part in a promotion with Laconia Harley Davidson called the No Bull Business Run where we rode Harleys to the Rally in the Valley in North Conway all the way back to Meredith and Laconia. As part of that run, we distributed information to motorcyclists about the benefits of expanding or relocating a business to New Hampshire. We also took the opportunity to ask them what they like about our state – almost to a person, their responses were the same – they like the low tax nature that New Hampshire has become famous for, they like the scenic beauty of our state and they like visiting a place where “live free or die” still means something. Individual freedoms are respected and treasured in New Hampshire, government is responsive and innovative and businesses receive the support and assistance that they need to grow and thrive.

There’s no secret why our state is consistently named the most livable in the nation – it’s because of our low tax, business friendly environment, our low crime rate, our welcoming nature and our true desire to attract and keep businesses.

On behalf of my director Roy Duddy, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development welcomes motorcyclists to the state of New Hampshire and issues one simple message – come here to ride and enjoy Motorcycle Week and stay and build a thriving business in a state that is awaiting you with open arms. New Hampshire is ready to help your business dreams become a business reality – thanks!”

Special thanks to Jennifer Anderson and Charlie St. Clair of the Laconia Motorcycle Week Association for their hard work in promoting a world class event and to Paul Lessard, outgoing Motorcycle Week Association Board President, who is stepping down after this year to pursue a new challenge – taking care of his young son as a stay at home Dad. You are all wonderful!

– Steve Boucher, Communications & Legislative Director

NH Business Recruitment Team Spreading Green Jobs Message to MA

Friday, April 16th, 2010

On Earth Day, New Hampshire’s business recruitment team will be sharing a simple message with their friends to the south – the grass is always greener on the Granite State side of the fence.

They Might Be Giants

Next Thursday, two New Hampshire Division of Economic Development business recruiters will take part in 92.5 The River’s Earth Day concert on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway in Boston. Featuring “green” vendors, family activities and a concert by national recording stars They Might Be Giants and Citizen Cope, the event offers the economic development team an opportunity to discuss the advantages associated with doing business in New Hampshire.

“With the recent announcement of the University of New Hampshire Green Launching Pad, an innovative green energy technology commercialization program, there has never been a better time to establish an environmentally conscious business in New Hampshire,” New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy said. “The development of good paying green jobs is an emerging reality in today’s business world and the Granite State is fertile ground for companies interested in promoting environmentally sustainable practices.”

Accompanying the Division of Economic Development’s team will be Randy Bryan of ConVerdant Vehicles, a two-year-old Concord, NH-based company that converts pickup trucks and Toyota Priuses to plug-in hybrids. In an effort to draw more visitors to the New Hampshire booth, Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion has donated a pair of tickets to this year’s Greenerpalooza III concert.

“We’re blessed to have such great partners who share our vision for a state that embraces both business growth and energy conservation,” Duddy said. “We look forward to meeting with Massachusetts companies looking to expand or relocate and to spreading the word about New Hampshire as a premier destination to do business.”

New North Country Economic Development Site Launched

Monday, April 12th, 2010

The North Country Council and the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development have announced the launch of a new website, www.NorthCountryEconomy.com, that is designed to promote New Hampshire’s North Country as a great place to do business.

fly-fishing1In making the announcement, New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Roy Duddy said, “The North Country has so much to offer businesses that are interested in relocating or expanding: lots of available real estate, available and skilled labor, an excellent infrastructure, some outstanding business incentives and a great quality of life. This new website details it all while giving the site visitor a real feel for what it’s like in the North Country. Site visitors have the ability to search for commercial real estate—including industrial, office and retail space—by town or for the whole region.”

The site is available in both English and French. Duddy continues, “Many Canadian companies in Quebec are looking for a way to enter the American market. Expanding into the North Country is a good move for them; they get a U.S. base in an area where real estate’s still affordable and where there’s a skilled workforce—and it’s all just over the border from their headquarters. The Division of Economic Development has been marketing to Quebec for several years, and already Canadian companies such as Codet Inc., Kheops International, and Godin Guitars have made the North Country their home.  We’re so pleased to have this new website in French to help in our economic development efforts.”

Special thanks to Nancy Clark and her fantastic team at the Glen Group for their dynamite work on this project!!

EarthTec Named March “Innovation Rocks!” Winner

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Wearing recycled plastic bottles on your head might sound strange to most, but not to the staff of EarthTec, winner of the New Hampshire Business Resource Center’s “Innovation Rocks!” award for the month of March.

earthtec_greenThe Portsmouth-based company, an eco-conscious company that turns recyclable plastic bottles into lifestyle apparel, is one of the first firms of its kind. LRCC Statewide Energy Training a Success

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Lakes Region Community College (LRCC), with the assistance of a NH Division of Economic Development sponsored grant, announces that the initial 2009 Building Performance Institute (BPI) Energy Certification statewide trainings have been a success.  To date, 84 students have completed the rigorous six-and-a-half-day training program in Laconia, Littleton, Nashua, and Concord.

“The BPI statewide trainings are designed to prepare individuals to satisfactorily complete the BPI Building Analyst Certification written and field tests,” says Andy Duncan, Ph.D. (Bow), Principal, Building Energy Technologies, LLC, the main instructor of LRCC’s statewide course.  “It has been exciting to be at the forefront of the green movement in the State.”  Duncan was a professor of Environmental Science at New England College (Henniker) from 1997 to 2003 before entering his own business.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI), a nationally recognized standards development and contractor credentialing organization for residential energy efficiency retrofit work, reported exponential growth in 2009.  BPI affiliate training organizations grew  by more than 35% through August of 2009, from 70 to 95, and 108 training affiliates were expected to be on board by the end of 2009, an increase of almost 300% over 12 months.

“Given the rise of green jobs and the need for energy auditors statewide, the NH Public Utilities Commission grant with the NH Division of Economic Development as the sponsoring partner, is tremendous news for New Hampshire,” says NH Division of Economic Development Interim Director, Roy Duddy.  “This training will not only allow more NH businesses and residents to become more energy efficient, it will also provide an excellent career path for interested students.”

Students completing the training satisfactorily and who pass the coveted BPI Building Analyst certification may become energy auditors, analysts, building operators, resource conservation managers, technical service representatives, and measurement and verification technicians.
