Cyber crimes can strike any business, at any time, at any place in the world, including New Hampshire.
A webinar from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, on Feb. 22 tackles the topic and is especially of interest to businesses involved in international e-commerce. Cybersecurity and Fraud Prevention will be led by Chris Brenton, senior director of information systems at Dyn in Manchester. Brenton has extensive experience in the computer security industry and is credited with uncovering numerous security vulnerabilities.

The next time you’re at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, check out a video there in the lobby, which represents a nice collaboration of organizations who are high on New Hampshire for all that it offers in terms of business, lifestyle and possibility.
Earlier this week, our friends at the New Hampshire High Tech Council unveiled the exhibit at the airport, which features clips from Stay Work Play New Hampshire and the University of New Hampshire. The video runs in a loop, greeting travelers on their way out of the terminal.
 NH at MHT It’s the first snapshot of the Granite State, a video landscape of our economy, tech sector, commitment to research and quality of life.
The tech council’s board of directors, understanding that the airport is a prime opportunity to grab the attention of visitors to the state, worked on the collaboration to make the video possible.
“We knew that a unique format like a video with key messaging about our state would catch people’s attention and demonstrate the value proposition the state offers to launch, relocate and grow a business,” said Matt Cookson, executive director of the council. “The airport staff was extremely supportive of this effort to create a welcoming message to the millions of people that fly in and out on Manchester every year.”
Jeffrey Rose, commissioner of the Department of Resources and Economic Development, was quick to sign on.
“With our focus on recruiting new businesses to the state and ensuring that their workforce needs are met we are open to finding innovative ways to reach new audiences,” he said. “We consider ourselves champions of the economic opportunities within New Hampshire and this video is a creative way to highlight some of the state’s advantages.”
For its contribution to the video, Stay Work Play NH answers the question What makes New Hampshire a great place to live and work?
(The answer, of course, is our quality of life statistics — as one of the lowest poverty rates in the nation and number one rankings in child and family well-being and the most livable state.)
UNH highlights its support of the high tech sector in the state through research and programs such as the Emerging Technology Center, the Flow Physics Facility and the Technology Transfer Center.
The display is located on the first floor of the airport to the right of the main entrance. The effort was underwritten by Dyn, Fairpoint Communications, Image 4 Productions and Nanocomp Technologies.

Just as inspiration has led countless Granite State entrepreneurs to create products and services that are changing the world, the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development is hoping its annual gathering will spark the ideas that result in business formation.
 Burns Development Group Principal Linda Burns “The Declaration of Inspiration” is the theme of the 16th Annual New Hampshire Economic Development Summit to be held at Church Landing in Meredith on Tuesday, December 13th from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
“Inspiration is what drives entrepreneurs to develop new ideas, attempt the impossible and stand tall in a highly competitive business environment,” said New Hampshire Division of Economic Development Interim Director Christopher Way. “It’s only fitting that we use our annual summit to recognize the great companies that are responsible for growing our economy while also opening the door for new prospective business owners to network with economic development practitioners and partner organizations.”
The keynote speaker for the event will be Burns Development Group Principal Linda Burns, a national site selector with over 30 years experience in corporate recruitment relocation and expansion strategies; economic development and workforce assessment, target marketing, government relations, and non-profit organizational planning. She brings public sector insight to her consulting due to her years of partnering with the Dallas-Fort Worth region’s cities and the State to market and recruit major companies to Texas, including the corporate headquarters of AT&T, Comerica, Research in Motion/Blackberry, and Blockbuster. Burns will discuss how New Hampshire economic developers and businesses can work together to foster an environment that is attractive to site selectors looking to place clients interested in relocation or expansion.
In addition to the keynote address, there will be two interactive business panels offered. The “Leading the Pack – Inc. 5000” panel will feature a group of New Hampshire businesses including Rustic Crust and Dyn that were featured on this year’s Inc. 5000 list while the “Business Underground – Rising to the Top” panel will feature a group of emerging companies including EARTHTEC, Animetrics and Tradeport USA that are known for their innovation and cutting edge technology. Other sessions will feature Glen Group Owner Nancy Clark who will discuss “How to Survive When Your Industry is Considered an Expense” and Epiphanies Inc. Co-Owner Allen Voivod who will present “Safety in Numbers: The Crowdsourcing of Inspiration.”
For the third consecutive year, Scott Spradling of the Spradling Group (www.spradlinggroup.com) will be the guest emcee. As a special touch, Melissa Koerner of Friend Your Body (www.friendyourbody.com) will kick off the day by getting attendees’ blood circulating and sharing a few tips for transforming health while “on the go.” Entertainment will be provided by local musician Jim Tyrrell (www.jimtyrrell.net) whose third full-length album “Onward to Yesterday” was released in 2010. The “Commissioner’s Awards for Economic Development Excellence” will also be presented.

Business NH Magazine host the fifth annual NH’s Top 100 Private Companies Reception at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord on Monday, October 24 from 5-7 p.m.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen will be the keynote speaker at the first annual Small Business Week Forum hosted by Mayor Ted Gatsas and Manchester’s Economic Development Office. The kick-off event will be held on Monday, May 16th from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University. The Forum will also feature a panel discussion on financing options for small businesses, followed by a Small Business Resource Fair. Manchester’s Small Business Week is presented by Citizens Bank.
 U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen As a past Governor and current Senator, Jeanne Shaheen understands the important role small businesses play in our City and State’s economy. “Innovative small businesses are the drivers of job creation in Manchester, in New Hampshire, and across the nation,” said Senator Shaheen. “Their creativity and ingenuity are important keys to America’s future economic prosperity and international competitiveness.” During the event, Senator Shaheen will discuss how she and her colleagues in Washington are working to help small businesses grow and prosper in New Hampshire.
“This week-long event celebrates the contributions small businesses make to our city’s economic vitality, and will provide business owners with resources to help them succeed,” said Chris Wellington, City of Manchester, Economic Development Office. “If you own your own business, or are thinking of starting one in Manchester, this is a great opportunity to network and learn.”

A panel of judges on behalf of the NH High Technology Council (NHHTC) selected eight semi-finalist companies vying for the opportunity to win the 2010 Product of the Year award.
 The semi-finalist companies are as follows: Warner Power, Hypertherm, Ektron, JitterJam, GSSI, Skyscan, Travel Brains My Tour Guide, and VGO.
Company representatives will make formal presentations and the judges will select up to five finalists. All finalists will be awarded the Product of the Year Judges’ Award. These Finalist Judges’ Award Winners will pitch their products at the Product of the Year banquet held on November 15th at the Radisson Hotel-Center of NH in Manchester.
“We had a very strong pool of applicants this year and the judges will be challenged to narrow it down further. The quality of products coming out of New Hampshire companies right now is very high and we should be excited about the product development capabilities of our technology sector,” said Art Bruinooge, member of the NHHTC Board of Directors and POY event chair.
The event requires audience engagement and participation, as the entire audience casts their vote for their top product after the presentations are made. The audience vote counts towards 50% of the final tabulation and the initial judge’s vote counts for the remaining 50%. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the banquet and will earn the prestigious NHHTC Product of the Year crystal trophy, which was designed for the Council by Pepi Hermann. The trophy and the finalist’s winning product will be on display in a highly visible location at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
Companies that have won the Product of the Year award over the past four years were Nanocomp Technologies, UltraVision, Insight Tech Gear, and Holase, Incorporated. Several prominent organizations are sponsoring this year’s POY event. They include DYN, FairPoint, Cook, Little, Rosenblatt, Manson PLLC, Sadler Insurance Agency, One Beacon Technology Insurance, GT Solar, Public Service of New Hampshire, Dell and JBC Communications.
